Until the last century, all sapphires (excluding blue) were called the same name as a popular gemstone. Sapphire with a color other than blue is often called a "fancy" in the gemstone trade.

How to identify sapphires
2010-07-23 12:34:55
Sapphire is among the most beautiful and most precious gemstones in the world. They come in a wide spectrum of colors, including yellow, pink and a mixture of orange hues. Sapphires are often associated with the color blue and are the most precious of blue gemstones. When you are gong to by them as gifts, here are useful information for identifying sapphires.
Look at the sapphire closely. Try to find metallic platelets, flux fingerprints or glass bubbles. You may need an instrument to do this. If there are any of these signs, it may be a treated stone or simply a fake. Genuine sapphires do not have these.
Ask the seller about the name of the gemstones. A variety of names of the gemstones reflect the information where they were mined. Real gemstones are most likely Australian sapphires, Burmese (now Myanmar) sapphires, Thai sapphires, Kashmir sapphires, Montana or Yogo sapphires, Oriental sapphires and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) sapphires.
Look at the color. Each sapphire, mined from different origins, may vary in color.
Try to be familiar with the descriptive names. It is useful to distinguish gemstones and determine whether the gemstone is genuine or not. Names such as Water Sapphire, Chatham Sapphire and Lux Sapphire are descriptive names for synthetic gemstones.
Sapphire is a most desirable gemstone due to its color, hardness, durability, and luster. So it is worth to remember these to choose good sapphires.
