How to tell topoz from sapphire stones

Topaz and sapphire have similarities in color varieties, hardness and luster. Therefore it is difficult for most people to tell one from another. Even though they share these similar physical characteristics, each stone has its individual qualities which distinguish topaz from sapphire. If you make a few observations and tests, you can tell the difference between them.
1.Color
Take a look at the color of the stone. The color of topaz varies commonly in golden brown to yellow tones, as well as in red, green, orange and pink. While the color of sapphire comes commonly in blue.
2.Luster
Observe the luster of the two stones. Sapphire has a small higher luster than topaz. But owing to so similar luster of the two, it is best to use a refractmeter to measure the luster. A topaz measures around 1.61-1.64, while the refractive index of a sapphire comes approximately 1.76-1.78.
3.Hardness
Examine the hardness of the gemstone. Gemologists use testing kits to examine the hardness of the stone on the Mohs scale. The scale ranges from 1 to 10. Topaz ranks at 8 on the Mohs, and sapphire ranks at 9. The different index of two stones allows you to identify.
