1. The categories of jade. True jade can be either of two different minerals, jadeite or nephrite. ①Jadeite is the more rare of the two jade variations, and the most expensive. Most of the world's supply of fine jadeite comes from Burma, but deposits are found in Guatemala and a few other areas around the world. Jadeite occurs in many colors, including greens, white, lavender, yellows and oranges, black and reds. ②Nephrite is more plentiful than jadeite, and that makes it less expensive. The Xinjiang Province in China produced the jade traditionally used by Chinese artisans until Burmese jadeite became available to them in the 1700's. Nephrite deposits have been discovered all around the world, even in the United States. Nephrite jade is found in fewer colors than jadeite. Instead of a bright emerald green, nephrite greens are often grayish or mottled.
2. The famous styles of jade. ① Hetian Jade. In China, the most reputable jade producing area is Hetian in Xinjiang Province. Hetian Jade was used to create many utilitarian and ceremonial objects, ranging from indoor decorative items to jade burial suits. It was considered more valuable than gold or silver. ② Nanyang Jade. Nanyang County in Henan Province is famous for its abundant Nanyang jade. The ore district is located on an isolated 200 meter high hill, called Dushan Hill (thus its other name of 'Dushan jade'). It is distinctive for its whimsicality. Among the Nanyang jade artworks, you will find rare purple, blue and red. ③ Lantian Jade. It is produced in Lantian County, north of Xian in Shaanxi Province. It was also among the most charming ancient jades. Its rigidity made it easier to be carved into decorations and jewelry by the ancient Chinese. Their hue is uneven in colors of yellow or light green.
