The different types of Jade
2010-09-03 09:36:40
Jade is a stone valued for its beauty and utility. It is essentially divided into two types: Nephrite Jade and Jadeite Jade. According to the color of jade, there may be other jade names like “imperial jade”, “ice jade”, “lemon jade”, etc. Here we mainly discuss Nephrite Jade and Jadeite Jade.
Nephrite Jade is mainly found in China. Chemically speaking, nephrite jade is made up of a mineral called actinolite, a mineral high in both magnesium and calcium. It is usually used in finely carved jade artwork and artifacts. And in value, it is cheaper than jadeite jade because it is more abundant. In strength, nephrite jade has a strength of 6.5 in Moh’s scale, so it is more prone to chipping and breaking than jadeite jade which has a strength of 7 in Moh’s scale.
Jadeite Jade is chiefly found in Burma. Compared to nephrite jade, It finds more uses in jewelry and more expensive. Jadeite jade is also stronger which means that it is more resistant to breaking and chipping.
In many Western countries, for example, the most highly-prized varieties of jade are those with the most vivid greens — especially those which seem almost emerald in hue. In China, on the other hand, jade that is virtually white, or jade with tinges of yellow, is very valuable.
Overall, jade is viewed as a stone to symbolize luck and to offer protection in many countries. And the Egyptians believe that it embodies personal harmony. Besides the differences in use, price and strength, the two types of jade differs slightly in color. Nephrite jade appears mostly in brown, green and white, while jadeite jade tends to occur in imperial green, lavender, pale yellow and grey.
