2010-06-24 17:27:00
Turquoise was likely found and used by early man. Certainly, the prehistoric peoples of the Western hemisphere knew about turquoise. The history of turquoise in China dates back to the 13th century A.D. Today, one of the largest turquoise mines is in the northwest Hubei province of China. Since the Qing Dynasty, there were large amounts of turquoise mined throughout China. Now, much turquoise of China was used for carving and creating other art and craft. Therefore, most turquoise was traded from the Persians, Turks, Tibetans, and the Mongols.
Turquoise in Tibet of China is another typical kind of turquoise stone. Tibet has its own source of turquoise. It usually a green cast, very hard stone with a significant amount of spider webbing. Tibetans ranked turquoise in six grades, the most valuable grade is far more expensive than gold. And turquoise in Tibet was a highly revered item. Almost every Tibetan wore or carried a piece of turquoise throughout life over time.
It’s apparent that turquoise was a popular trade item, as so much has been found in archeological sites many hundreds of miles away from sources.
