While, pearls can be graded from A, AA to AAA in quality according to their size, color, luster, shape and surface.
Pearl size
All pearls are measured in millimeters. Tiny seed pearls can be smaller than 1 mm, while south sea pearls are 20 mm large. Pearl size is determined by the size of the implant that was introduced during its cultivation process. The larger the pearl is, the higher the quality is.

This should be a blue, green or rose hue. It is this "coming from within" quality that determines the value of a pearl, based on coloring. The depth of the color projection also adds greatly to its value.

The luster is what really gives the true beauty of the pearl, it is what gives the pearls it’s shine. High quality pearls have an equal reflection all throughout the surface and appears very shiny. The luster of good quality pearls is sharp and bright. You can judge the luster of a pearl by attempting to see your reflection on the surface of the pearl.
