How to identify genuine freshwater pearls

Pearls are elegant jewelry that can be shaped as necklaces, bracelets, earrings or even as an accent to a ring. There are several different types of genuine pearls. Now we will talk about how to identify real freshwaer pearl.
Freshwater pearls are formed inside mussels that are living in lakes, rivers, ponds, or any other body of fresh water. To help you with identifying genuine freshwater pearls, here are some tips:
1. Tooth test. Get the pearl and run it against your front teeth, just right below the biting edge. If you sense a gritty feeling, it is most probably real. Imitation pearls are smooth, like plastic or glass. However, be very careful of the pearls that are made from ground shells as they can also be gritty.
2. Pearl luster test. Test the pearls against all kinds of light. Fake pearls will have a shine only on the surface, while genuine pearls always shine from within.
3. Temperature aware. Genuine pearls tend to warm to the skin much faster than glass pearls. Resin or plastic pearls tend to feel somewhat warm upon first contact.
4. Rub test. Get two pearls and rub it together. It should be gritty and do not slide off each other.
5. Other Visual Cues. Fakes tend to look 'flat' in comparison to the real thing. Real pearls tend not to be perfect and may have bands in their nacre, bumps, ridges, or pits. They vary in size and shape from one to another. However expensive genuine pearls may be round.
6. X-rays. It’s the most reliable way. It will show the inside of the pearl, including variations in its density, the presence or absence of a parasite that might have caused the formation of a natural pearl, and the characteristic shapes of drill holes, if present.
There are a lot of fake pearls out there, but it is more pleasant to own a genuine freshwater pearl jewelry at least once in your lifetime. Just please try the test methods above before you buy one for yourself.
