“Sapphire” comes from Latin language and Greek language meaning “blue”. But sapphire also comes in other colors, like pink, orange, yellow, green, purple and black. Sapphire has long been received all over the world, and in this article, we will talk about the history of the sapphire gemstone.
The history of sapphires dates back to 800 B.C., when blue sapphires were considered to reflect heaven and drive off the evils. In ancient civilizations like Persia, sapphire was chosen by clergy, emperors and kings as precious gemstones, and was considered as a talisman by ancient people.
In Renaissance Europe, an abbess wrote about the healing powers of gemstone in her book, and pointed out that sapphire had the capacity to strengthen the intellect, which showed the standing of sapphires in religious thought at that time.
For ages spectacular sapphires have been recorded along with the history. In 1900, an American financier called Morgan offered the Star of India blue star sapphire to the American Museum of Natural History; 22 years later in the other half of the world, Queen Marie of Romania wore a necklace with a 478.68 carat blue sapphire from Sri Lanka.
In 1989, Harold Roper of North Carolina discovered a 9,719.5 carat sapphire gem called “The Lone Star”, which is recorded as the largest known sapphire gemstone.
Today many of the most famous sapphires have their origin in Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Kashmir. Modern designers treat the sapphire through process like controlled heating and diffusion to enhance the color and clarity of sapphires, to make it more beautiful.
