How to make silver chain earrings
2010-09-23 11:07:42
With a little bit of time and skills, and a few supplies, you will be able to make your own silver chain earrings. It is not only a clever way to save money, but also very creative to make your silver chain earrings stand out.
Things needed are presented below:
18 gauge fine silver, a charcoal block, acetylene or propane torch, 3/8" dowel, metal scribe, chain nose pliers and round nose pliers.
The next is steps of making:
1.Bundle the fine silver wire neatly and put it on charcoal block to anneal. Quench. Now the wire is not sterling silver any more, which makes the fusing process possible. Wrap the annealed wire around the 3/8" dowel with average tension on the wire, not leaving gaps or overlaps. Then anneal the wrapped length of wire.
2.Keeping the shape of wrapped length, cut a few rounds at a time. Keeping every cutter at the location the last one was. Repeat this until you have at least 36 wire circles. Close the ends of the circles to create tension by moving back and forth.
3.Place the closed rings on a charcoal block and use the torch to heat until the end of each one fuses together. Pay attention to the point of fusing, concentrating a fraction of a second longer at the join. Neither too heated or not enough, continue when having 30 completed rings.
4.On the needle nose pliers, locate the ring about half-way down. Stretch the ring by opening the pliers. Remember to record the length the ring is stretched to guarantee that all rings are the same. Having at least 26 then go ahead.
5.Put the stretched ring on the pliers again. The chain nose pliers should be at a 90-degree angle. Pinch the ring in the middle to shape a dog bone and all the rings are the same. Removing the ring, softly squeeze one end of the dog bone to be thinner. Squeeze thin all except two links, which will be the starting links for others.
6.Referring to the scribe or pliers as mandrel, put at the center of the dog bone and curve the link sides slightly around mandrel by fingers. Keep it in mind to form a U shape except for the two starter links. Arrange the formed links in a neat pile on the graphite block and anneal.
7.Meet the loop ends to make it from the U shape to an O shape by shaping the starter links around the mandrel. Through the two loop ends of the first link, feed the thin loop end of the second link. Insert the scribe into both loops of the second link. Repeat from the other direction and make sure that both loops are the same size and are touching and the second link is just the same with the first link. Do this again and again until 12 links make up each chain. Add an earring finding to the first link of each chain.
All in all, it is really a procedure calling for patience and carefulness. Follow the steps to make silver chain earrings that belong to yourself.
