2010-06-22 09:20:00
Dyed capiz shell can date back to when the Spanish introduced Christianity to the area in the 1500s, and church building supplies were needed. They were dyed, and Spanish craftsmen fashioned them into windows, copying the stained glass principle. Now you can still find some of the original windows constructed from dyed capiz shells. All natural dyes were used to give the shells vivid colors. It's easier to dye a capiz shell now using manufactured acid dyes. But can we dye the capiz shell by ourselves at home? Let’s see the method of dyed shell.
If you like dying a capiz shell with one uniform color, you can boil your shells in an old soup pot with one cup distilled water with one teaspoon white vinegar and 1/8 teaspoon. Then you can strain the shells from the water solution, and dispose of the liquid before rinse the pot thoroughly. Next, you should place 2cups of water into the pot and heat. Add 3/4taspoons of dye powder to the pot, and stir it until a uniform color is reached. Last but not least, add the shells to the pot. Strain the shells from the dye, and spread them onto paper towels to dry.
After you have dyed copiz shell as above, you can make your own dyed capiz shell decoration and enjoy the process.
