Making guide on surfer shell necklace
2010-07-05 17:15:00
Surfer shell necklaces are typically made with seashells and beads and a tiny hole in them so they can by strung together. You can string seashells onto the necklace with the addition of these beads to make a surfer necklace that suits your style. They also come in many colors, but the most popular colors are white, off-white and other colors found in nature. Follow this article, you will learn how to make surfer shell necklace.
Step 1 Wash the seashells you collected from beach to remove any dirt and debris. Dry the shells thoroughly with a soft cloth after you wash them. Clamp a seashell into a vise to keep it in place. Attach a small ceramic bit to a rotary tool. Mark the place where you want to make the hole on the seashell with a permanent marker.
Step 2 Use a measuring tape to measure your neck to determine the size for your necklace. If you want the necklace to remain close to your neck, then add 2 inches to provide for plenty of room for the clasps. Cut a piece a string this length.
Step 3 Tie a clasp to the end of the string. Measure about a half an inch above the last bead on the end and make a knot. Make sure that you tie the clasp securely so that it does not fall off; you will tie the other end of the clasp after you finish stringing on your seashells and beads. You may need to knot it twice so that the knot is larger than the holes of the beads to prevent them from sliding off.
Step 4 Add the beads and seashells to the string. You can use whatever beads you prefer, but small seed beads and shell beads are typical for surfer necklaces. Lay out everything before you string it onto the necklace to get an idea of how it will look. Do not forget tie on the other clasp end. You may need to remove some of the beads or seashells so that you have enough string to tie the clasp on.
