The introduction to south sea pearls
2010-06-15 09:40:00
South Sea pearls grow in the rarest, largest and most solitary oysters in the world – Pinctada maxima, which exists only on an extremely limited number of shell beds in the tropical waters. They are the rarest of all pearls and typically measure anywhere between 10mm to 20mm in diameter.
The South Sea pearl has a wide repertoire of colours. It can display an array of colours from white through silver, and from cream through yellow to deep gold. The pearls may also display a lovely “overtone” of a different colour such as pink, blue, or green. However, the most sought after pearls in the world are the white and gold South Sea pearls.
White South Sea pearls are often referred to as the queen of gems. They are grown primarily in Western Australia in the Pinctada maxima pearl oyster. The Philippines and Indonesia are home to the South Sea Gold Pearls, formed by gold oysters. The size ranges from 9-16mm in diameter. The majority of the pearls display champagne color, the minority gold, a true indicator in value.
Due to the limited quality produced, South Sea Pearls have become extremely rare and precious. Every pearl is unique due to the complex and subtle influence of the ocean environment. The beauty and allure of South Sea pearls come from their beautiful satin luster and thick nacre which accumulates layer by layer for over 3 years. They are the “Queen” of today’s cultured pearls. A perfectly spherical South Sea pearl is the zenith of gems and why, nurtured by the pristine tropical waters of Indonesia, beautiful Atlas South Sea pearls are a miracle of nature and human endeavour.
