How to spot cultured pearl
2010-06-15 08:24:00
Cultured pearls are formed in the oyster or mussel, they are pearls produced with or without the insertion by man of a bead by grafting, followed by maintaining the mollusk in culture until the pearl is harvested. Since the natural pearls are rare, the cultured pearls have become a great part of pearl market. But there are also some fake pearls on the pearl market, here we will teach you some methods that can help you spot the cultured pearls from the fake pearls.
1. Rub a pearl against a mirror it should leave a white residue (it does not matter what color the pearl is). The residue is like a white powder. Sometimes the pearl will scratch the mirror, so if you ruin your favorite mirror, please don't blame me.
2. Rub the pearl across your teeth (maybe not the best way to spot a fake, but simple). If it’s a real pearl it will feel rough, a fake pearl will feel smooth and silky after it is rubbed against your teeth.
3. Another way is to rub two pearls together. Fake pearls will feel smooth when rubbed against each other. Real pearls seem to creat friction and are rough when rubbed against each other, they may also get scratched (scratches will be removed when rubbing over them).
4. Pearls do not melt, if you set a real pearl near a flame, it will not melt. The real pearl may have some flame marks but they should be easy to remove with a cloth, just wipe it clean.
