2010-07-20 14:29:05
Pearls are known as the queen of gemstones as well as the gemstone of queen, amongst the oldest and most universal of all gemstones. Though pearls are relatively inexpensive decorations, in history they used to be a treasure of almost incomparable value. This passage will present you with a brief history of pearls.
Pearls are the oldest jewelry known to man. While the oldest surviving pearl necklace was found in the tomb of a Persian Princess nearly 2000 years ago, pearls were worn in Middle East and Asian world as early as 3500 B.C. The pearl fever reached its acme during Roman times, when a pearl earring can be used to pay for one Roman general’s political campaign and pearls were the favorite of women.
The pearl trend continued and was still popular at the beginning of the Christian era. The value placed on the gemstones can be seen in the bible which mentions pearls several times. Pearls continued to be used in jewelry, apparel as well as art.
The demand of pearls declined in the early 1700s, when diamond discovered in Brazil is more affordable and soared in demand. At the same time, some cheap imitations of pearls began to appear on the market as a result of the unsteady sources of pearls. All the factors led to the decline of pearls.
In the late of 1700s, however, things changed when several established pearl sources had a good harvest and thus boost the pearl industry.
Because of the shortage of supply, cultured pearl appeared on the market in the early 1900s. But it took years for people to accept this kind of pearl. Since then cultured pearl has replaced natural pearl.
Nowadays pearl jewelry is one of the most classic jewelry, highly regarded by women and is an indispensible item for a woman’s jewelry collection.
