How to clean and care for brass
2010-09-27 08:51:27
Brass is fused by copper which will turn blue, green, or dark and tarnish rapidly and zinc which will turn quite dark as well. As a result, together, brass is more resistant to tarnish, oxidation and is more valuable. However, brass cannot be unbeatable in a world with a lot of air pollution. It does turn dark and needs to be polished periodically.
Here are the ways of cleaning and caring for brass:
1.Lacquered brass.
All old lacquer must be removed first. Then completely clean the surface to the degree that no dirt or fingerprint is left on it. After that, spray the lacquer on evenly. For decorative items, wash them in sudsy, lukewarm water, rinse and dry. Hot water is forbidden on lacquered items as it loosens the lacquer; never polish them or soak them in water.
Olive oil can make the brass look brighter. By rubbing it with a cloth moistened with olive oil you can save the amount of polish. Olive oil retards tarnish.
2.Tarnished brass.
Brass that is not lacquered tarnishes when exposed to air. Wipe the brass with a soft cloth with a little liquid ammonia weekly to keep it shiny.
A soft tarnished item. Wash in hot, soapy water, rinse and dry. Make a paste of whiting and boiled linseed oil. Apply with a soft cloth and rub to remove tarnish. Wipe off excess paste and polish with a clean cloth.
A heavy tarnish item. Wash in hot, soapy water or a weak ammonia and water solution and rinse. Dampen a soft cloth in hot vinegar, then dip in table salt and rub the brass, or make a paste of flour, salt and vinegar. When the item is clean, wash in hot, soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly, then polish with a cloth moistened with lemon oil. If preferred, dip a slice of fresh lemon into table salt and rub over the corroded area. Wash, rinse and dry carefully.
Overall, the procedure of cleaning and caring for brass requires much time and work. It you want the brass stay beautiful and stunning, you need to spend patience on it.
