An introduction about moonstone
2010-06-24 16:39:00
Moonstones are beautiful gemstones that have a history of magic and spirituality. It comes in colorless, white, yellow, orange, and gray. It always has a white or blue sheen. That is, moonstone reflects light in a distinctive shimmering phenomenon known as adularescence. The classical moonstones which are almost transparent and with their bluish shimmer, come from Sri Lanka. However, they are also found in the USA, Brazil, Australia, Myanmar and Madagascar. Since high quality moonstones have been becoming more and more of a rarity in recent years, prices have risen sharply.
Moonstone is made of feldspar which is a common stone that covers 60 percent of the Earth's crust and which contains no metal or ores. When viscous magna begins to cool, the minerals within it become concentrated. When water becomes infused into the liquid magma, it gradually cools over millions of years, forming crystals within the rock. In moonstone, these crystals are laid down, layer after layer, which, when later mined and cut, give the stone its special glow.
Moonstone appears more often in pieces designed for women so they are the popular in women’s jewelry. Large moonstone cabochons can be used in necklaces and bracelets, while smaller stones are used in earrings and rings. A moonstone must be handled with care, because moonstones are soft and brittle. If mishandled, they can scratch or break easily, although small scratches can be repaired with refinishing, which will reduce the overall size of the moonstone. Most moonstone jewelry is designed to protect the stone while showcasing its adularescent quality, and wearers of moonstones should make sure that they are well seated in their mountings.
