How to care for coral jewelry
2010-06-09 18:29:00
Coral is cut into gemstone beads from the natural porous skeletal deposits that form in the sea. A prized material for jewelry-making, coral requires special care due to its composition and other characteristics. Coral beads are generally white, pink, red and blue but can even be gold or black. If artificially colored, the color is changed by various methods, including using dyes, heat treatments and chemical treatments. Composed of calcium carbonate, it does not react well to contact with chemicals or acids. Coral beads might also be reconstituted from dried "coral dust." Coral may be shined to a glossy polish as in bamboo coral, or have a rough, coarsely textured finish, as in sponge coral.
Coral gemstone jewelry is easily chipped because lightweight, soft delicate in its organic origins, so requires special care if it is to last. So treat your coral necklaces, bracelets, earrings and anklets gently.
Apply hairspray and perfume before putting on your coral jewelry. Coral stones may sustain damage if exposed to chemicals.
When you clean the coral jewelry, you should wipe your coral pieces with a clean, damp, soft cloth, and allow them to air dry before storing. After the coral dried, store coral in individual bags or a lined box away from your other pieces of jewelry to avoid scratching.
