Pure coral, also known as 'fire coral' or 'ox blood coral' is becoming very rare due to the high demand for perfect specimens used in jewelry making, and the stress that over-collection is placing on the environmental health of handmade red coral reefs.

Since dried up Coral reefs are usually huge in scale, it is an affordable material as well.
It should be noted that while most of the coral that is sold is natural and genuine, there are fake coral products available as well. They are usually created either by plastic, glass or porcelain. It is easy to spot fake Coral because true coral which is made from calcium carbonate will effervesce when it comes into contact with acid, fake Coral from plastic, glass and porcelain will not.

Coral has always been popular as a material for jewelry, but has also been given qualities for mystical purposes. The origin of coral is explained in Greek mythology by the story of Perseus.
Having petrified Cetus, the sea monster threatening Andromeda, Perseus placed Medusa's head on the riverbank while he washed his hands. When he recovered her head, he saw that her blood had turned the seaweed (in some variants the reeds) into coral.
