History of the wedding rings
2010-07-23 15:20:51
In marriage, the wedding ring is most famous and recognizable symbol of the joining of a man and a woman as husband and wife. The wedding rings have a long, wide spread and mysterious history. The history of wedding rings begins in the deserts of North Africa, where the river Nile brought fortune and life to the Pharaoh’s people. In ancient Egyptian civilization, the first wedding rings were fashioned according to plants growing on its’ banks.
The ring began to be associated with love, hoping that most worthy of emotions could take on the characteristics of the circle and capture eternity.
They wore it like we do today, on the third finger of the left hand, because it was believed that the vein of that finger directly traveled from the heart. Later the Greeks took up this legend.
In early times, people opted for leather, bone or ivory to craft their love. In later years, after early metal rings quite clumsily made and uneven in the extreme, wedding gifts are made of precious and semi-precious stones not only for the beauty, but also for their unique meaning with them.
The circles are chosen to e represent an unbroken promise of love and commitment, no beginning and no end, symbolizing the marriage has no end. In fact, many past cultures shared the same beliefs about the circles.
Another theory about the circles is that marriage was regarded as "half of the religion." In religion, the wedding ring represents two halves coming together to form a united whole.
Wedding rings make two souls together. The greatest gifts lovers can give each another is the security and safety that only the wedding rings provide.
