2010-06-09 17:10:00
Antique jewelry has an inherent uniqueness and charm, and in different eras they were with different typical styles. So let’s see some representative styles of antique engagement ring.
Victorian Antique Engagement Rings (1835-1900)
In this period, engagement rings often set in yellow or rose gold, Victorian rings have both simple elegant designs to very intricate ones. Sentimental jewelry such as lockets and brooches were popular pieces during this time, as were colored gemstones and diamonds for evening wear in early Victorian. Until the mid-Victorian era, certain jewelry pieces have a subdued, austere, and somber design because of the death of Queen Victoria. Known as mourning jewelry, these pieces feature heavy, dark stones, particularly jet, as well as onyx, amethyst, and deep red garnets. In the late Victorian period, jewelry designers used diamonds and gemstones with feminine colors, such as sapphires, peridot, and spinel.
Edwardian Engagement Rings (1900-1920)
After Queen Victoria died her son Edward took the throne, ushering in the Edwardian era. When the oxyacetylene torch was invented, platinum became the vogue metal for antique engagement rings. Along with rose-cut diamonds, brilliant sapphires were especially popular during the Edwardian era.
Art Deco Engagement Rings(1920-1930)
Art Deco jewelry features geometric shapes, strong lines, and bright color contrasts. So Art Deco antique engagement rings reflect the era with a streamlined geometric look. This era was influenced by Egyptian, African, and Japanese themes, as well as Cubism and speed motifs (such as air travel and automobiles). Art Deco rings are currently the most popular antique engagement rings for newly engaged couples.
Antique jewelry means old-fashioned jewelry. It could refer to jewelries handed down from generation to generation, and it also includes jewelry with a historic value. They are treasured not just for the money value. Rather, they are relics from a memorable past.
