Brief history on Fendi handbags
2010-06-22 16:57:00
Fendi is an Italian fashion design house most famous for its luxury handbags. The Fendi brand has been around more than 100 years now. Now let’s review a brief history on Fendi handbags.
In 1925, Adele Casagande had the brand open under her own name with she opened a store in Rome, Italy with leather and furs, but then she married a man who was also a designer named (Eduardo) "Fendi" and changed the name to run the business with him. The shop instantly does well because of the quality of workmanship. In 1932, the Fendis open another shop and the Fendi name spreads.
Fendi bags in the '40s and '50s were influenced by World War II. Because metal and leather were in short supply, bags were made from hard materials, such as plastic and wood. In 1946, the Fendis' five daughters begin working for their parents' company. The sisters meet Karl Lagerfeld and hire him as a designer for Fendi. Under the hands of Karl Lagerfeld, the "double F" that is the symbol of the brand Fendi is born.
The '60s were a time of revolution and free thinking. During this period, Fendi transformed the look and feel of the handbag from rigid and structured to soft, supple and unstructured with leather and fabric. Fendi's first clothing line is developed in 1977, and expanded in 1984. In 1985, the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome holds a 60th anniversary event for Fendi, and the first Fendi perfume is marketed.
The Baguette bag was introduced in 1997 by Silvia Venturini Fendi and quickly becomes a cult object. It is so called because it was meant to be held under the arm like a loaf of bread. In 2005, the "Spy Bag" is introduced and in 2006, the "B Fendi Bag" is marketed. Crafted from rich leather, the slouchy body was topped with its most distinguishing feature--braided double top handles. A huge success when it was released, it became an instant collector's item. In 2009, Fendi has 160 boutiques in 25 countries in the world.
Today, Fendi continues to be innovative with its handbag designs. Its strong, bold pieces are not meant to match an outfit but to inspire it.
