Brief history of crystal glass

Crystal glass derives from rock crystal and is distinguishable by hand or machine cut facets; but the average person on the street can quickly recognize crystal glass by its superior "sparkle power." It's no wonder that crystal glass has enjoyed such popularity throughout the centuries. The continent, especially Venice, saw a trade develop and skilled glassblowers were highly valued. In the 1600s, a new glass process whereby lead was added to the glass mixture was patented. This new technique improved the glass quality with a higher lead content leading to fewer imperfections. The glass that contains lead is brighter and harder and it makes a ring noise when struck.
The number of glass producers highly increased and the regime decided to tax them, putting most of them out of business. Those that survived all had their own glass recipes and their own designs. In 1800 the famous Swarovski glasshouse appeared. This glasshouse is very popular for its crystal glass.
