As for cleaning jewelry, the same methods may not work for all kinds of jewelry. In other words, if a particular method works for one type it may actually ruin others.
Costume jewelry: although it is much cheaper than fine jewelry with precious metal and inlaid rare gemstone, it still requires careful attention since quite a few are made with special cement that can get damaged by harsh cleaners. Usually, wipe away the dirt with a soft, clean and moist cloth. Next, they must be thoroughly dried. Hot water and other forms of heat must never be applied.
Metal jewelry: some metal jewelry will be tarnished after frequent wearing. So it is also called oxidized jewelry. And you should never brush metal jewelry. Some types of oxidized jewelry can lose their beauty, when cleaned with a tarnish remover. Hot water must be avoided.
Shell jewelry, coral jewelry and cultured pearls: This must be carefully wiped with a moist cloth to get rid of sweat; dirt and oil build up form its contact with the skin. There are special cleaners available particularly for pearls in the market. The main thing to watch for is to ensure that the piece is completely dry after cleaning. Steam and hot water must never be used. Pearls are never soaked in water or other chemical products.
Genuine pearls and gemstones: Never keep your favorite pearl strand or gemstone pendant soaked in water. Pearls must be worn as often as possible so that they can maintain their luster. It is easy to clean them by wiping pearls or gemstones with a muslin cloth moistened with gentle diluted dishwashing liquid.
Gold jewelry: as we all know, gold is very precious and expensive. Regular dishwashing liquid can be used to clean gold pieces, after which they can be cleaned with plain warm water and dried. Never wear gold while swimming as the chlorine can make it look dull.
Diamonds: although diamond is the hardest stone, it needs careful cleaning when set with platinum or other metals. Put on last and take off first. In other words, swimming pool chlorine and other household cleaners containing chemical can harm diamond pieces. The best thing to use is a mild solution of ammonia and a gentle toothbrush to get into the nooks.
No matter what kinds of jewelry, do not wear jewelry while gardening or doing housework that involves contact with dust and cleaning materials. Inspect your jewelry from time to time to watch for stones coming loose so that they can be repaired without delay. If you can take good care of your jewelry, you must will be the star among the crowd by wearing these sparkle jewelry.
