The history of December's birthstone
2010-09-27 09:30:08
Monthly birthstones symbolize the month of birth according to the Gregorian calendar. There are several stones can be regarded as the December's birthstone, and let's see the history of December's birthstone seperately.
Here are introductions for each of them:
1.Turquoise.
It is the oldest and most popular of December’s birthstones. It was found on artifacts in ancient Egypt 5000 years ago. The first deposits of turquoise were first found in the ancient France.
Then Egyptians used it as a precious stone firstly. The tomb of Tutankhamen was packed with turquoise jewelry on its sarcophagus and mortuary mask.
Millennia later, Turquoise became a sacred stone for Tibetans and Native Americans who used it extensively in their specific religious rituals officiated by the shamans. Both Tibetans and the Native Americans believed Turquoise to promote spiritual and mental clarity and also help build trust, understanding and kindness within the community.
2.Blue Topaz.
The second modern December birthstone is Blue Topaz. As a precious stone, Blue Topaz became known only in the classical era. In its pure form, Topaz is colorless. However, skilled jewelers can turn it into just about any color with a little treatment, such as green, pink, blue and pink.
Traditionally, it was believed that topaz had healing powers, could dispel sadness, anger and nocturnal fears, to warn its wearer of poisons and protect him or her from sudden death. There are also a few weird beliefs, like if you wore a topaz ring, you could put your hand in hot water and not be harmed. I wouldn’t rely on that though.
Today, the Portuguese crown has a huge Topaz stone called that weighs 1680 carats. For a long time, it was thought that it actually was a diamond.
3.Tanzanite.
It was first discovered in the year of 1967 in Tanzania by a local Masai shepherd. It would soon become ‘the stone of the 20th century’, being popularized only two later by Tiffany’s with a massive marketing campaign.
Tanzanite is so popular today both because of its fascinating color but also because of its rarity, the only known deposits being in Tanzania, at Merelani.
Without a long history like other December birthstones, tanzanite does not have any powerful, mysterious powers associated to it. However, its beauty is irreplaceable.
4.Lapis Lazuli.
It has a rich history. Archeologists have found this deep blue gemstone in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, Greece and Rome, dating back to the fourth century B.C. The first time when it is brought into light is in northern Afghanistan over 6,000 years ago near the city of Ur. In the Middle East this gem is thought to have magical powers. Even Alexander the Great loved this gem crazily. He brought it to Europe and named it ultramarine, meaning "beyond the sea."
5.Zircon.
Its history can be traced back to Aaron's Breastplate. Today, this gem is mined in Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Australia and Sri Lanka.
As a whole, it was not until 2002 that the Jewelers of America added tanzanite as the last gem of the birthstones, thus completing the list of birthstones. Giving a piece of jewelry containing a birthstone gem will bring the wearer good luck and protection. Just chose one amazing stone from the December's birthstone family to enhance your luck and you will never be regretted.
