Pearls’ quality depends on pearls’ luster
2010-06-15 18:05:00
Natural pearls are so rare to find in nature that most pearls sold today are cultured. When choose a pearl, many things should take into consideration, The pearl luster has great relationship with the quality of the pearls.
When we talk about the luster we must know it’s definition first. It describes the shininess in a pearl and is a combination of surface brilliance and inner glow. This effect is created when light reflects off the many layers of tiny calcium carbonate crystals that compose the pearl. A very good luster means it has higher pearl quality.
Usually, a pearl's luster is a combination of surface reflection and a glow that really does come from within - from the many layers of nacre built up over time inside an oyster. Pearls with a very high luster will generally show the following characteristics when viewed under a bare light with the naked eye: 1.Strong light reflections 2.Sharp light reflections 3.A good contrast between the bright and darker areas of the pearl.
Generally, high luster pearls reflect light well and show mirror-like reflections. The more lustrous a pearl is, the more high quality. A truly lustrous pearl will have a jewel-like glow, with rainbow overtones. Low luster pearls appear milky or chalky, so when a pearl appears too perfectly white or too dull and chalky, it is of low quality. Since a very lustrous baroque pearl is probably more desirable than a round milky pearl, luster is generally considered to be one of the most important aspects of a pearl’s grading and valuation. The highest quality pearls have a sharp, mirror-like luster showing a high level of reflection. You should be able to see your reflection clearly on the surface of a pearl. Any pearl that appears too white, dull or chalky, is of low quality.
